Summer of fun at City’s My Clean Green Home

The City’s My Clean Green Home in Green Point Urban Park is open again to visitors for the summer season until Sunday, 18 December 2022. The full sized net zero carbon home gives visitors the opportunity to walk through and experience this sustainable way of living. The home is highly energy efficient powered by solar PV and is part of the City’s climate change response and resilience campaign, Let’s ACT. For a Stronger Cape Town. Capetonians are encouraged to visit the exhibit home and experience a number of fun-filled family activities hosted on the weekends.

The epitome of the City's vision for its energy future, the exhibit home, gives visitors a chance to walk through and experience for themselves what life could be like in a net zero carbon home.

'I am honoured to again declare this future-fit home open for the summer season. It is a small example of the actions we can all take in our homes to make a very real difference. As part of the City's climate change action, we are aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050 and the City has committed that all new buildings in Cape Town will be net zero carbon by 2030. While net zero carbon homes seem as if they would be difficult to create, this exhibit home shows that the technologies and building techniques already exist and are more than ever within reach of the average household.

'With no- and low-investment, all residents can act to make changes within their homes. All households can take similar, small actions to increase their energy, water and waste efficiency. This is an opportunity for residents to see for themselves what is required to tackle our climate challenges. This shows what is already possible and that all residents can take actions to increase the efficiency at home,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen.

A number of free, family-friendly, fun activities will be taking place at the home over the next few weeks, such as arts and crafts and scavenger hunts.

Virtual walk through tool – a first for a South African city

The My Clean Green Home virtual walk through provides residents with the opportunity to learn about sustainable living and better understand their electricity consumption. This interactive, immersive educational tool which allows the user to experience a net zero carbon home is a first for a South African city and provides a wealth of information which users can use in their own homes.
